Success isn't about how much you carry. It's how well you carry what matters.
The Five Carries™
A Framework for Carrying Life, Responsibility, Relationships, Leadership, and Legacy
What you carry — and how you carry it — shapes the quality of your life, the strength of your relationships, the effectiveness of your leadership, and the legacy you leave behind. The Five Carries™ is a practical framework for understanding the five interconnected directions of responsibility we carry throughout life and leadership: Within, Up, Down, Across, and Forward.
The Framework
What Are The Five Carries?
Four directions of responsibility. One person at the center. You. You carry upward, downward, across, and forward. But your ability to carry any of them effectively and sustainably depends on what you carry within.
Carry Within
Everything you carry depends on the capacity of the person doing the carrying. Your ability to carry responsibility outward depends upon the capacity you develop inward. Your character, health, mindset, habits, emotional capacity, your identity, spiritual life, and your resilience.
Carry Up
Supporting and influencing those who lead, mentor, guide, or hold responsibility above you. How you manage up, advocate for your team, and represent your work to those in authority.
Carry Down
Stewarding those entrusted to your care. The weight of leadership responsibility for those who report to you or look to you for guidance. Great leaders do not just carry the weight; they build the capacity of those beneath them.
Carry Across
Strengthening lateral relationships with your peers and partners. Collaboration, trust, and influence across organizational boundaries.
Carry Forward
Preparing for the future and creating lasting impact for the next generation. Legacy, succession, and the long view of what you are building starts with what you do in the present.
"The Five Carries™ isn't about carrying more. It's about developing the capacity to carry what matters well."
